I received the superintendent’s decision in the mail today. She upheld her previous decision to deny me tenure and give me an Unsatisfactory rating for the year. For a brief moment after opening the envelope, I sat quietly on the couch, tears welling up in my eyes. And then something happened. I began paying attention to my breath and I repeated today’s centering thought, “My truth and creativity are within.” As I repeated this phrase, a deep peace came over me.
You see friends, through this experience, I have rediscovered my purpose in life and recommitted to my inner vision. I refuse to let the politics of the NYC D.O.E. deter me from carrying out my mission in life. No, life’s too short for that. I know the journey ahead may not always be smooth sailing, but I have these three things that will carry me through whatever may come: faith, hope, and love-a love that as the authors of the book, Through the Eyes of Children: Walking and Learning with Children describe when speaking of love for the land as “a real imperfect love that includes consistency, patience, acceptance of daily challenges and silence.”
Friends, may we always be conscious of this truth.
